What is 2024 Aluminum
Aluminum 2024 belongs to the Al-Cu-Mg system of aluminum alloys. It has high strength and some heat resistance.
This alloy can be strengthened by heat treatment. But its corrosion resistance is not high.
1. Main alloying elements:
- Copper (Cu): with a content between 3.8% and 4.9%, it is one of the important alloying elements in 2024 aluminum alloy, which can increase the strength and hardness of the alloy.
- Magnesium (Mg): content between 1.2% and 1.8%, adding magnesium can improve the plasticity and toughness of the alloy.
- Manganese (Mn): content between 0.3% and 0.9%, the performance of the alloy has a certain effect of improvement
2. Its characteristics
- High strength: the tensile strength is usually between 350 MPa and 450 MPa, and the yield strength is between about 280 MPa and 320 MPa.
- Good toughness: the alloy’s machinability is still good after quenching and cold work hardening, but the machinability decreases after annealing.
3. 2024 aluminum physical properties:
- Density: about 2.73 g/cm³ (or 0.098 lb/in³), which is low relative to many other metals and therefore lightweight.
- Modulus of elasticity: typically between 70 GPa and 80 GPa, implying a high ability to return to its initial shape after being subjected to a force.
- Hardness: Higher hardness can be achieved with appropriate heat treatment, usually between HB120 and HB150.
- Coefficient of Thermal Expansion: Approximately 23.6 x 10^-6 /°C, with dimensional changes in response to temperature changes.
- Electrical conductivity: high, about 31.9 MS/m, suitable for some applications where electrical conductivity is required.
4. Its applications:
Automobile manufacturing:
With the deepening of the lightweight transformation of the automotive industry, the application of 2024 aluminum profile in automotive manufacturing is gradually increasing. It is mainly used in the manufacture of automobile body, chassis, engine mounts and other components to reduce vehicle weight, improve fuel economy and transportation efficiency.
Rail transportation:
